Memorandum of Understanding

between

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management of the Republic of Austria, The Ministry of Environment of the Czech Republic and The Ministry of Environment of the Slovak Republic

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management of the Republic of Austria, the Ministry of Environment of the Czech Republic and the Ministry of Environment of the Slovak Republic,

RECALLING their commitment to the objectives of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat (the Ramsar Convention, Iran 1971),

HAVING consulted all relevant organizations for mutual cooperation in implementing the Ramsar Convention particularly in the area along the common borders between Austria, the Slovak and the Czech Republics,

NOTING further that certain areas of this trilateral region have already been included into the list of wetlands of international importance,

AWARE of certain successful restoration projects which have already been implemented in the area concerned,

DESIRING to enhance communication and exchange of information relevant to the conservation and sustainable use of the area concerned,

STRESSING the importance of implementing joint strategies for conservation and sustainable use of the Ramsar Sites and other wetlands in this trilateral region,

Have reached the following understanding:

All sides agreed that it is appropriate to hold annual meetings within the framework of so called Trilateral Ramsar Platform of the Morava - Dyje floodplains (the Platform) with the aim to coordinate the efforts to achieve trilateral status for Ramsar Sites located along the border area including the development of a management plan for the trilateral Ramsar Site "Morava - Dyje floodplains" according to the ,,Guidelines for management planning for Ramsar Sites and other wetlands".

In the framework of the Platform, all sides are confirming the interest to cooperate with the intention to declare a trilateral Ramsar Site or trilateral wetland of international importance within the area concerned and to promote common measures for the conservation and sustainable use of that site.

All sides consider as the most convenient form of cooperation expert meetings of not more than 5 representatives from Austria, the Czech and Slovak Republics, so that major stakeholders are represented (the aforementioned ministries, water management institutions, national Ramsar committees, non-governmental organizations).

All sides are prepared to make available all relevant documents and information that may be necessary for the designation of the trilateral Ramsar Site and for the development of a management plan.

All sides express their willingness to make efforts to enhance communication and the exchange of information relevant to the conservation and sustainable use of the area concerned.

This Memorandum enters into force on the date of signing.
